Inspired and Active Minds is a mental health service for individuals aged 7 and above who face mild to moderate and complex mental health challenges. The service approaches mental wellbeing in a holistic and culturally appropriate way, empowering individuals to take control of their own journey towards wellness. IAM offers a range of activities to support mental and social wellbeing, creates personalised life choice plans, and helps individuals become socially and economically engaged. Additionally, the service provides education on mental health challenges to help individuals understand triggers and know when to seek help.

This service is accessible both in-person and online through one-on-one and group sessions, and can be accessed through various professional referrals and self-referrals. Inspired and Active Minds also accepts private clients and corporate referrals through HR and occupational teams. The company operates digitally, with the current ability to offer in-person consultations in the Yorkshire and Humber region, but with plans to expand nationwide as the team grows. The goal of Inspired and Active Minds is to reach those without access to traditional mental health support and improve their overall wellbeing.

Job description

The  purpose of a mental health Counsellor specialising in trauma therapy is to  provide evidence-based therapy and support to individuals who have  experienced trauma and are struggling with the psychological effects.  

The goal of this role is to help clients process their traumatic experiences, cope with related symptoms, and improve their overall mental well-being. This may involve providing individual or group therapy, conducting assessments and evaluations and collaborating with other mental health professionals and agencies to ensure that clients receive the best possible care and to help them overcome the challenges associated with trauma and achieve improved mental health and well-being.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for providing  counselling and support to individuals who have experienced trauma, such as  abuse, violence, or natural disasters. You will work with clients to help  them process their experiences, manage their emotions, and develop coping  strategies to move forward. you will be responsible for providing  trauma-focused therapy to individuals who have experienced trauma and are  struggling with the psychological effects. You will work with clients to help  them process their traumatic experiences, cope with related symptoms, and  improve their overall mental well-being.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Conduct individual and group therapy sessions using evidence-based trauma therapies such as EMDR and CBT  
  • Create treatment plans and goals for clients
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed
  • Conduct assessments and evaluate the progress of clients  
  • Collaborate with other mental health professionals and agencies
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records
Personal specifications:
  • Conduct individual and group therapy sessions: As a trauma therapy specialist, you will be       responsible for leading therapy sessions with clients who have experienced trauma. This may involve working with clients one-on-one or in a group setting, depending on the needs and preferences of the clients. You will use evidence-based trauma therapies such as EMDR (Eye       Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) and CBT (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy) to help clients process their traumatic experiences, cope with related symptoms, and improve their overall mental well-being.
  • Create treatment plans and goals for clients: As a mental health worker, you will be responsible for developing personalised treatment plans for each of your clients. You will work with clients to identify specific goals and objectives for therapy, and you will use these goals to guide the course of treatment. You will also be responsible for regularly reviewing and updating treatment plans to ensure that they are meeting the needs of the clients.
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed: Trauma therapy can be a challenging and emotional process, and clients may experience periods of crisis as they work through their traumatic experiences. As a mental health worker, you will be responsible for providing crisis intervention as needed to help clients manage their emotions and cope with difficult situations. This may       involve providing support and guidance over the phone or in person, or referring clients to other resources as needed.    
  • Conduct assessments and evaluate the progress of clients: As part of your role, you will be responsible for regularly assessing the progress of your clients. You will use various tools and techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of therapy and identify areas for improvement. You will also be responsible for tracking the progress of clients over time and providing regular updates       to other members of the treatment team.  
  • Collaborate with other mental health professionals and agencies: As a mental health worker, you will be part of a larger treatment team that may include other mental health       professionals and agencies. You will be responsible for collaborating with these professionals and agencies to ensure that clients receive the best possible care. This may involve sharing information and resources, coordinating treatment plans, and communicating with other members of the treatment team.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records: As a mental health worker, you will be       responsible for maintaining accurate and confidential records of your clients' treatment. This may include notes from therapy sessions, assessments, and progress reports. You will be responsible for ensuring that these records are kept confidential and are only shared with authorised       individuals as necessary.

Qualifications and training

A  degree or equivalent in counselling or a related field: such as social work or psychology.

Certification as a mental health professional: social worker, or psychologist, depending on your specific training and education.

Willing to undertake training in trauma therapy by completing additional training inevidence-based therapies such as EMDR or CBT. This specialised training will help you to better understand the unique challenges and needs of clients who have experienced trauma.

Experience, skills and specialist knowledge

Minimum of two years experience of working with individuals who have experienced trauma:  This may include experience in a clinical setting, working with organisations that support individuals who have experienced trauma, or volunteering with groups that provide support to trauma survivors.

Special aptitude, abilities and communication

Strong communication and interpersonal skills:  you will be responsible for building relationships with clients and working with them to identify and address their needs.

Ability to effectively communicate with clients and work with them to develop treatment plans and goals.

Empathy and compassion for others: Working with clients who have experienced trauma can be emotionally challenging, and it is important for this post holder to have empathy and compassion for the clients they serve.

You should be able to understand and relate to the experiences and emotions of your clients, and you should be able to provide support and understanding as they work through their challenges.

Ability to maintain a non-judgmental and accepting approach:

You should be able to create a safe and supportive environment for your clients, and you should be able to approach their challenges and experiences with an open mind and a willingness to listen and understand.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team:  . You should be able to take initiative and work independently to develop treatment plans and support clients, but you should also be able to collaborate with other professionals and agencies as needed to ensure that clients receive the best possible care.
